Announcing the new Bible Gateway Store!

Posted in News, Store by Andy on October 8th, 2009

We’re excited to announce the launch of the new Bible Gateway Store beta! The Bible Gateway Store has thousands of books to complement your online Bible reading and study. It’s got everything from Bibles to devotionals to Christian fiction to self-help books, as well as music, church supplies, and a wide variety of other products.

The Bible Gateway Store is a great way to pick up excellent products and support the Bible Gateway at the same time. The Store is in beta while we expand our inventory, fix bugs, and improve the shopping experience for final public release, but it’s fully functional—and even if you don’t buy anything, we welcome and ask for your feedback.

So take a look at the brand new Bible Gateway Store and check back often, as we’ll be adding new products on a regular basis! If you have questions, feedback, or comments about the Store during our beta testing period, please let us know.

This post was updated on November 25 to reflect some of the changes we’ve made to the store since its initial launch.

Quote Bible passages on your blog with the Embed Passage tool

Posted in Blogs, News by Andy on August 18th, 2009

Ever wanted to quickly and easily paste a Bible passage from BibleGateway.com into your blog or website? We’ve just added a tool that makes it easy to post Scripture passages from certain translations on your blog: the Embed Passage tool.

embedicon

The Embed Passage tool automatically creates a cleanly-formatted version of the Bible passage you’re reading, which you can then paste into a blog or website. It also generates a URL that links straight to the passage.

To use it, just click on the Embed Passage button in the row of icons above the Bible passage you’re reading. You’ll see a window like this:

embedbox

Here’s how it works:

  • The Passage field shows you which Bible passage is currently being used. If you want to change the range of quoted verses, you can do so by editing the book name or numbers and clicking Update.

  • To copy a permanent link to the Bible passage, click once in the Link field to select it, and copy it by right-clicking and selecting Copy. Alternately, press Control-C (Command-C on Macs).
  • To copy the entire Bible passage, click once in the Embed field to select it, and copy it (see the instructions in the above step).
  • You can then paste the link or the passage text directly into a blog or HTML editor. To paste it, right-click and select Paste, or press Control-V in Windows (Command-V on Macs).

By default, the Embed tool leaves verse numbers in the passage, but does not display footnotes, headings, or cross-references. You can toggle any of those options by clicking Show embed options at the bottom of the window and checking or unchecking the appropriate boxes:

embedoptions

We hope this tool makes it easier for you to link to or quote Scripture on your website or blog. Give it a try and let us know what you think, and how we can improve it. You can also post your thoughts and suggestions on the Bible Gateway fan page on Facebook.

Currently, the Embed Passage tool only works with our public domain Bibles, like the King James Version, and a few others, like the New King James Version, the New Century Version, and The Message. In the future, we hope to expand it to cover all of our Bibles. Here’s a list of Bibles currently supported:

  • American Standard Version

  • King James Version
  • Young’s Literal Translation
  • Darby Translation
  • 21st Century King James Version
  • New King James Version
  • The Message
  • Douay Rheims 1899 American Edition
  • Worldwide English New Testament
  • New Century Version

The 100 most-read Bible verses at BibleGateway.com

Posted in Fun, General, News by Andy on May 15th, 2009

What are the most popular Bible verses on BibleGateway.com?

We thought it would be interesting to find out, so we crunched some numbers from a (relatively) small sample of 25 million Bible passage searches from March and April.

This list isn’t actually based on a straight popularity count; simply tallying the most-read verses results in a top 100 list that consists almost entirely of John 3:16 and verses from 1 Corinthians 13, Genesis 1, Romans 8, and Psalm 23. Our list instead considers instances in which BibleGateway.com users looked at three or fewer verses at one time.

If you’re curious to know what the least popular Bible passage is, it’s 1 Chronicles 23-27, which details the organization of the priests and officials under King David.

Here are the top 100 most-read Bible verses on BibleGateway.com (all verses quoted from the NIV):

  1. John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Read through the Bible in a year with new Bible Gateway reading plans!

Posted in News by Andy on December 30th, 2008

Have you ever wanted to read through the entire Bible? If you’ve ever decided—perhaps as a New Year’s resolution—that you’re going to read all the way through the Bible, you’ve probably learned two things the hard way: 1) the Bible is very long, and 2) parts of the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, can be a real challenge to read straight through.

All the same, there are few things more spiritually rewarding than reading through Scripture in its entirety. And we at the Bible Gateway want to help. So we’ve added new tools to help you read through the entire Bible in a year: our new Bible reading plans. Starting on January 1, 2009, you can start reading through the Bible, one short daily reading at a time. You can read your daily reading online here at the Bible Gateway, or receive the daily readings via RSS or iCal.

There are four different ways you can read through the Bible—choose the one that works best for you! These plans are graciously provided by BibleYear.com:

  • Old/New Testament: each day features a reading from both the Old and the New Testaments, so you read through both Testaments together.
  • Chronological: reads through the Bible in the order that its events occurred historically. For example, Job lived sometime after the beginning of creation (Genesis 1) but before Abraham was born (Genesis 12). As a result, the Book of Job is integrated into the Book of Genesis.
  • Beginning: starts at the very beginning of the Bible and reads straight through to the end.
  • Historical: reads through the books of the Bible in the order in which they were written historically, according to the estimated dates of their writing.

To get your daily reading, visit the daily reading page each day starting on New Year’s Day, where your Bible reading for the day will be displayed. You might want to bookmark that page for easy reference (right click on this link and choose “Add to favorites/bookmarks”). You can also receive your reading via RSS or iCal.

We hope you find the new reading plans useful—and we hope you’ll use them to make your way through the Bible in 2009, whether you’ve read through it many times before or have never done so!

Mam language Bible now available

Posted in New version, News by Andy on July 25th, 2008

We’ve added a new Bible version to the Bible Gateway today—the Mam, Comitancillo Central version (MVC). It’s one of many Mayan languages still spoken today.

The Mam people, who trace their lineage back to the Mayan civilization, live as subsistence farmers in the northern highlands of Guatemala on the border with Mexico. The Mam tried to keep their language secret for years, but today the language is spoken with pride.

Here’s what John 3:16 looks like in the Mam language:

You can access the MVC Bible through the Bible Gateway version drop-down selector. If you’re interested in further reading, Wikipedia has a short article about the Mam language and a more extensive article about the Mayan language family, of which Mam is a part.

What’s with the New Search Results on Biblegateway?

Posted in General, News, gospel.com by csalzman on December 18th, 2007

Last week we rolled out some new functionality on Biblegateway.com. Perhaps you noticed, but when you do a search on Biblegateway.com there is a new results section from a place called Gospel.com. It looks something like this:

Gospelcom

Perhaps you’re asking the question, “What’s Gospel.com?” Well, friends, that’s a great question. Here’s a quick explanation:

Biblegateway.com is just one of the web sites that make up the Gospel Communications International Internet Ministry Department (a mouthful that refers to our online ministries). In November we launched Gospel.com, which is an online directory of web pages from our Gospel.com Community. The advantage of a directory is that instead of automatically indexing information on the internet each link is individually indexed by a person. The result is a directory with much more focused resources organized into different topics. And as our Community adds and bookmarks new content to their web sites Gospel.com just keeps getting better.

We’re pretty excited about Gospel.com. The next time you search on the BG, we hope you take a chance to check out one of the links from Gospel.com.
