Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up;

Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil;

Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth with the truth;

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Charity never falleth away: whether prophecies shall be made void, or tongues shall cease, or knowledge shall be destroyed.

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child.

12 We see now through a glass in a dark manner; but then face to face. Now I know in part; but then I shall know even as I am known.

13 And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.

14 Follow after charity, be zealous for spiritual gifts; but rather that you may prophesy.

For he that speaketh in a tongue, speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man heareth. Yet by the Spirit he speaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesieth, speaketh to men unto edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

He that speaketh in a tongue, edifieth himself: but he that prophesieth, edifieth the church.

And I would have you all to speak with tongues, but rather to prophesy. For greater is he that prophesieth, than he that speaketh with tongues: unless perhaps he interpret, that the church may receive edification.

Love is patient,(A) love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.(B) It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,(C) it is not easily angered,(D) it keeps no record of wrongs.(E) Love does not delight in evil(F) but rejoices with the truth.(G) It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.(H)

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies,(I) they will cease; where there are tongues,(J) they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part(K) and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes,(L) what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood(M) behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror;(N) then we shall see face to face.(O) Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.(P)

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.(Q) But the greatest of these is love.(R)

Intelligibility in Worship

14 Follow the way of love(S) and eagerly desire(T) gifts of the Spirit,(U) especially prophecy.(V) For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a](W) does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them;(X) they utter mysteries(Y) by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening,(Z) encouraging(AA) and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue(AB) edifies(AC) themselves, but the one who prophesies(AD) edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[b] but I would rather have you prophesy.(AE) The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues,[c] unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.(AF)
