17 For this cause have I sent to you Timothy, who is my dearest son and faithful in the Lord; who will put you in mind of my ways, which are in Christ Jesus; as I teach everywhere in every church.

18 As if I would not come to you, so some are puffed up.

19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will: and will know, not the speech of them that are puffed up, but the power.

20 For the kingdom of God is not in speech, but in power.

21 What will you? shall I come to you with a rod; or in charity, and in the spirit of meekness?

It is absolutely heard, that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as the like is not among the heathens; that one should have his father's wife.

And you are puffed up; and have not rather mourned, that he might be taken away from among you, that hath done this deed.

I indeed, absent in body, but present in spirit, have already judged, as though I were present, him that hath so done,

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, you being gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus;

To deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

17 For this reason I have sent to you(A) Timothy,(B) my son(C) whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.(D)

18 Some of you have become arrogant,(E) as if I were not coming to you.(F) 19 But I will come to you very soon,(G) if the Lord is willing,(H) and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of(I) talk but of power.(J) 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline,(K) or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?

Dealing With a Case of Incest

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(L) And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(M) and have put out of your fellowship(N) the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(O) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(P) on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over(Q) to Satan(R) for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(S)
