Like living stones yourselves, you are being built up into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices that will be well pleasing to God through Jesus the Messiah.

That’s why it stands in scripture:

Look! I’m setting up in Zion
a chosen, precious cornerstone;
believe in him! You’ll not be ashamed.

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,(E)
and the one who trusts in him
    will never be put to shame.”[b](F)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(G)

“The stone the builders rejected(H)
    has become the cornerstone,”[c](I)
