⁴ They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.^{(A) 5} But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.^{(B) 6} For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,^(C) so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

⁷ The end of all things is near.^(D) Therefore be alert and of sober mind^(E) so that you may pray.

⁶ He said to me: “It is done.^(A) I am the Alpha and the Omega,^(B) the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost^(C) from the spring of the water of life.^{(D) 7} Those who are victorious^(E) will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.^{(F) 8} But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars^(G)—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur.^(H) This is the second death.”^(I)
