6 Vai de cei ce trăiesc(A) fără grijă în Sion şi la adăpost, pe muntele Samariei, vai de mai-marii(B) aceştia ai celui dintâi dintre neamuri, la care aleargă casa lui Israel!… 2 Treceţi(C) la Calne(D) şi vedeţi, duceţi-vă de acolo până la Hamatul(E) cel mare şi pogorâţi-vă în Gat(F), la filisteni. Sunt oare cetăţile acestea mai înfloritoare(G) decât cele două împărăţii ale voastre şi este ţinutul lor mai întins decât al vostru?… 3 Credeţi(H) că ziua nenorocirii(I) este departe şi faceţi să se apropie(J) domnia silniciei(K). 4 Ei se culcă pe paturi de fildeş şi stau întinşi alene pe aşternuturile lor; mănâncă miei din turmă şi viţei puşi la îngrăşat. 5 Aiurează(L) în sunetul alăutei, se cred iscusiţi, ca David(M), în instrumentele de muzică. 6 Beau vin cu pahare largi, se ung cu cel mai bun untdelemn şi nu se întristează de prăpădul(N) lui Iosif! 7 De aceea vor merge în robie în fruntea prinşilor de război şi vor înceta strigătele de veselie ale acestor desfătaţi. 8 Domnul(O) Dumnezeu a jurat pe Sine Însuşi şi Domnul, Dumnezeul oştirilor, a zis: ‘Mi-e scârbă de mândria(P) lui Iacov şi-i urăsc palatele, de aceea voi da în mâna vrăjmaşului cetatea cu tot ce este în ea. 9 Şi, dacă vor mai rămâne zece oameni într-o casă, vor muri. 10 Când unchiul său va lua pe cel mort să-l ardă, ridicându-i oasele din casă, şi va întreba pe cel din fundul casei: «Mai este cineva cu tine?» acela va răspunde: «Nimeni»… Iar celălalt va zice: «Tăcere(Q)! Căci(R) nu trebuie să pomenim acum Numele Domnului!» 11 Căci iată că Domnul(S) porunceşte să se dărâme casa cea mare(T) şi să se facă bucăţi casa cea mică. 12 Pot caii să alerge pe o stâncă? Sau poate cineva să are marea cu boii, de aţi prefăcut judecata în otravă(U) şi roada dreptăţii în pelin? 13 Vă bucuraţi de lucruri de nimic şi ziceţi: «Oare nu prin tăria noastră am câştigat noi putere?» 14 De aceea, iată, voi ridica(V) împotriva voastră, casa lui Israel, zice Domnul, Dumnezeul oştirilor, un neam care vă va asupri de la intrarea Hamatului(W) până la pârâul pustiei’.

6 «Vai de cei ce trăiesc fără grijă în Sion,
de cei ce se cred la adăpost pe Muntele Samaria,
oameni distinşi ai celui mai de seamă dintre neamuri,
la care apelează Casa lui Israel!
2 Treceţi la Kalne şi priviţi!
Mergeţi de acolo la marele Hamat
şi coborâţi apoi la Gatul filistenilor!
Sunt ele mai bune decât cele două regate ale voastre?
Sau sunt hotarele lor mai mari decât hotarele voastre?
3 Aţi dat deoparte ziua cea rea[a]
şi aţi adus aproape tronul violenţei!
4 Ei se întind pe paturi încrustate cu fildeş,
se tolănesc în aşternuturile lor,
mănâncă miei din turmă
şi viţei din grajduri.
5 Petrec[b] în sunetul harfei[c],
şi, asemenea lui David, improvizează la instrumentele muzicale!
6 Beau vin din cupe mari
şi se ung cu cele mai bune uleiuri,
dar nu sunt mâhniți din pricina dezastrului lui Iosif!
7 De aceea, ei vor merge acum în captivitate în fruntea captivilor,
şi vor înceta astfel strigătele de veselie şi lenevirea!»
Domnul detestă mândria lui Israel
8 Stăpânul Domn a jurat pe Sine Însuşi. Astfel zice Domnul, Dumnezeul Oştirilor:
«Mi-e scârbă de mândria lui Iacov
şi îi urăsc fortăreţele;
voi da pe mâna duşmanului cetatea
şi tot ce este în ea!
9 Dacă vor mai fi lăsaţi zece bărbaţi într-o casă şi aceia vor muri! 10 Iar când ruda vreunuia va veni să-i scoată trupul[d] din casă, ca să-l ardă,[e] şi-l va întreba pe cel care încă mai este ascuns în nişa casei: ‘Mai este cineva cu tine?’, i se va răspunde: ‘Nu!’. Atunci ruda va zice: ‘Tăcere! Nu trebuie să pomenim Numele Domnului!’»
11 Căci iată că Domnul porunceşte:
«Casa cea mare va fi prefăcută în fărâme,
iar casa cea mică[f] – în bucăţele!»
12 «Pot caii să alerge pe stâncă
sau poate cineva să are acolo cu boii[g]?
Totuşi voi aţi prefăcut judecata în otravă,
iar rodul dreptăţii – în pelin.
13 Voi vă bucuraţi de ceea ce s-a întâmplat la Lo Debar[h]
şi ziceţi: ‘Oare nu prin puterea noastră am cucerit noi Karnaimul[i]?’
14 Dar iată că voi ridica împotriva ta, Casă a lui Israel,
zice Domnul, Dumnezeul Oştirilor,
un neam care te va asupri
de la Lebo Hamat[j] până la Valea Arabei[k].»“

6 Woe to you(A) who are complacent(B) in Zion,
and to you who feel secure(C) on Mount Samaria,(D)
you notable men of the foremost nation,
to whom the people of Israel come!(E)
2 Go to Kalneh(F) and look at it;
go from there to great Hamath,(G)
and then go down to Gath(H) in Philistia.
Are they better off than(I) your two kingdoms?
Is their land larger than yours?
3 You put off the day of disaster
and bring near a reign of terror.(J)
4 You lie on beds adorned with ivory
and lounge on your couches.(K)
You dine on choice lambs
and fattened calves.(L)
5 You strum away on your harps(M) like David
and improvise on musical instruments.(N)
6 You drink wine(O) by the bowlful
and use the finest lotions,
but you do not grieve(P) over the ruin of Joseph.(Q)
7 Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;(R)
your feasting and lounging will end.(S)
The Lord Abhors the Pride of Israel
8 The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself(T)—the Lord God Almighty declares:
“I abhor(U) the pride of Jacob(V)
and detest his fortresses;(W)
I will deliver up(X) the city
and everything in it.(Y)”
9 If ten(Z) people are left in one house, they too will die. 10 And if the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of the house to burn them[a](AA) asks anyone who might be hiding there, “Is anyone else with you?” and he says, “No,” then he will go on to say, “Hush!(AB) We must not mention the name of the Lord.”
11 For the Lord has given the command,
and he will smash(AC) the great house(AD) into pieces
and the small house into bits.(AE)

6 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
2 Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?
3 Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;
4 That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;
5 That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;
6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
7 Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.
8 The Lord God hath sworn by himself, saith the Lord the God of hosts, I abhor the excellency of Jacob, and hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein.
9 And it shall come to pass, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die.
10 And a man's uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the Lord.
11 For, behold, the Lord commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.
12 Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:
13 Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?
14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the Lord the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.
