14 and they made (A)their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they rigorously [a]imposed on them.
15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom [b]was named Shiphrah and the other [c]was named Puah; 16 and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, (B)if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

14 They made their lives bitter with harsh labor(A) in brick(B) and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.(C)
15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives,(D) whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, 16 “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”(E)
