Genesis 37:22-24

22 Reuben further said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but do not lay hands on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hands, to restore him to his father. 23 So it came about, when Joseph [a]reached his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his [b]tunic, the varicolored tunic that was on him; 24 and they took him and threw him into the pit. Now the pit was empty, without any water in it.

New International Version
22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern(A) here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.(B)
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe(C) he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern.(D) The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
