46 And Israel taking his journey, with all that he had, came to the well of the oath, and killing victims there to the God of his father Isaac,

He heard him by a vision in the night calling him, and saying to him: Jacob, Jacob. And he answered him: Lo, here I am.

God said to him: I am the most mighty God of thy father: fear not, go down into Egypt, for I will make a great nation of thee there.

I will go down with thee thither, and will bring thee back again from thence: Joseph also shall put his hands upon thy eyes.

And Jacob rose up from the well of the oath: and his sons took him up, with their children and wives in the wagons, which Pharao had sent to carry the old man,

And all that he had in the land of Chanaan, and he came into Egypt with all his seed:

His sons, and grandsons, daughters, and all his offspring together.

And God spoke to Israel(E) in a vision at night(F) and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”

“Here I am,”(G) he replied.

“I am God, the God of your father,”(H) he said. “Do not be afraid(I) to go down to Egypt,(J) for I will make you into a great nation(K) there.(L) I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.(M) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.(N)

Then Jacob left Beersheba,(O) and Israel’s(P) sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts(Q) that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. 15 My son, if thy mind be wise, my heart shall rejoice with thee:

16 And my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips shall speak what is right.

17 Let not thy heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long:

18 Because thou shalt have hope in the latter end, and thy expectation shall not be taken away.

19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise: and guide thy mind in the way.

20 Be not in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in their revellings, who contribute flesh to eat:

21 Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together shall be consumed; and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags.

22 Hearken to thy father, that beget thee: and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23 Buy truth, and do not sell wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24 The father of the just rejoiceth greatly: he that hath begotten a wise son, shall have joy in him.

25 Let thy father, and thy mother be joyful, and let her rejoice that bore thee.

26 My son, give me thy heart: and let thy eyes keep my ways.

27 For a harlot is a deep ditch: and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

28 She lieth in wait in the way as a robber, and him whom she shall see unwary, she will kill.

29 Who hath woe? whose father hath woe? who hath contentions? who falls into pits? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30 Surely they that pass their time in wine, and study to drink of their cups.

31 Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly,

32 But in the end, it will bite like a snake, and will spread abroad poison like a basilisk.

33 Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.

34 And thou shalt be as one sleeping in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot fast asleep, when the stern is lost.

35 And thou shalt say: They have beaten me, but I was not sensible of pain: they drew me, and I felt not: when shall I awake, and find wine again?

24 Seek not to be like evil men, neither desire to be with them:

Because their mind studieth robberies, and their lips speak deceits.

By wisdom the house shall be built, and by prudence it shall be strengthened.

By instruction the storerooms shall be filled with all precious and most beautiful wealth.

A wise man is strong: and a knowing man, stout and valiant.

Saying 14

15 My son, if your heart is wise,
    then my heart will be glad indeed;
16 my inmost being will rejoice
    when your lips speak what is right.(A)

Saying 15

17 Do not let your heart envy(B) sinners,
    but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.
18 There is surely a future hope for you,
    and your hope will not be cut off.(C)

Saying 16

19 Listen, my son,(D) and be wise,
    and set your heart on the right path:
20 Do not join those who drink too much wine(E)
    or gorge themselves on meat,
21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor,(F)
    and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

Saying 17

22 Listen to your father, who gave you life,
    and do not despise your mother when she is old.(G)
23 Buy the truth and do not sell it—
    wisdom, instruction and insight as well.(H)
24 The father of a righteous child has great joy;
    a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.(I)
25 May your father and mother rejoice;
    may she who gave you birth be joyful!(J)

Saying 18

26 My son,(K) give me your heart
    and let your eyes delight in my ways,(L)
27 for an adulterous woman is a deep pit,(M)
    and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
28 Like a bandit she lies in wait(N)
    and multiplies the unfaithful among men.

Saying 19

29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
    Who has strife? Who has complaints?
    Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 Those who linger over wine,(O)
    who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
    when it sparkles in the cup,
    when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake
    and poisons like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange sights,
    and your mind will imagine confusing things.
34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
    lying on top of the rigging.
35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
    They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
    so I can find another drink?”(P)

Saying 20

24 Do not envy(Q) the wicked,
    do not desire their company;
for their hearts plot violence,(R)
    and their lips talk about making trouble.(S)

By wisdom a house is built,(T)
    and through understanding it is established;
through knowledge its rooms are filled
    with rare and beautiful treasures.(U)

Saying 22

The wise prevail through great power,
    and those who have knowledge muster their strength.
