Genesis 16

Hagar and Ishmael

 ⁶ "Your servant is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

 ⁷ The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. ⁸ And he said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?"
      "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered.

 ⁹ Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her." ¹⁰ The angel added, "I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count."

 ¹¹ The angel of the LORD also said to her:
       "You are now with child
       and you will have a son.
       You shall name him Ishmael, ^[a]
       for the LORD has heard of your misery.

 ¹² He will be a wild donkey of a man;
       his hand will be against everyone
       and everyone's hand against him,
       and he will live in hostility
       toward ^[b] all his brothers."

 ¹³ She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen ^[c] the One who sees me." ¹⁴ That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi ^[d] ; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.

 ¹⁵ So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.

Genesis 18

The Three Visitors

 ³ He said, "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, ^[a] do not pass your servant by. ⁴ Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. ⁵ Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant."
      "Very well," they answered, "do as you say."

 ⁶ So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick," he said, "get three seahs ^[b] of fine flour and knead it and bake some bread."

 ⁷ Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. ⁸ He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

 ⁹ "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked him.
      "There, in the tent," he said.

 ¹⁰ Then the LORD ^[c] said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son."
      Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. ¹¹ Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. ¹² So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my master ^[d] is old, will I now have this pleasure?"

 ¹³ Then the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' ¹⁴ Is anything too hard for the LORD ? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."

 ¹⁵ Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh."
      But he said, "Yes, you did laugh."

The Birth of Isaac

 ⁶ Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." ⁷ And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."
