And He began telling this parable: “A man had (A)a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Look! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree [a]without finding any. (B)Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, leave it alone for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.’”

Healing on the Sabbath

10 Now Jesus was (C)teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And [b]there was a woman who for eighteen years had had (D)a [c]sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent over double, and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” 13 And He (E)laid His hands on her; and immediately she stood up straight again, and began (F)glorifying God. 14 But (G)the synagogue leader, indignant because Jesus (H)had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, “(I)There are six days during which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 But (J)the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, (K)does each of you on the Sabbath not untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? 16 And this woman, (L)a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom (M)Satan has bound for [d]eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this restraint on the Sabbath day?” 17 And as He said this, all His opponents were being [e]humiliated; and (N)the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.(A) So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down!(B) Why should it use up the soil?’

“‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”

Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath

10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,(C) 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.(D) She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her,(E) and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,(F) the synagogue leader(G) said to the people, “There are six days for work.(H) So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?(I) 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,(J) whom Satan(K) has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”

17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated,(L) but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.
