Let the Children Come to Me

15 (A)Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they (B)rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, (C)“Let the children come to me, and (D)do not hinder them, (E)for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17 (F)Truly, I say to you, whoever does not (G)receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

The Rich Ruler

18 (H)And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to (I)inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: (J)‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, (K)“All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. (L)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have (M)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 (N)But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, (O)“How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter (P)the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter (Q)the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But he said, (R)“What is impossible with man is possible with God.” 28 And Peter said, “See, (S)we have left our homes and followed you.” 29 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, (T)there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers[a] or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive (U)many times more (V)in this time, and in (W)the age to come eternal life.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

31 (X)And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, (Y)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (Z)everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32 For he will be (AA)delivered over to the Gentiles and will be (AB)mocked and shamefully treated and (AC)spit upon. 33 And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on (AD)the third day he will rise.” 34 (AE)But they understood none of these things. (AF)This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar

35 (AG)As he drew near to Jericho, (AH)a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. 37 They told him, (AI)“Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 And he cried out, “Jesus, (AJ)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 And those who were in front (AK)rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, 41 (AL)“What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; (AM)your faith has (AN)made you well.” 43 And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, (AO)glorifying God. And (AP)all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Jesus and Zacchaeus

19 (AQ)He entered Jericho and was passing through. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And (AR)he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into (AS)a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for (AT)I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and (AU)received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all (AV)grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods (AW)I give to the poor. And if I have (AX)defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it (AY)fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since (AZ)he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For (BA)the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

The Parable of the Ten Minas

11 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because (BB)they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. 12 He said therefore, (BC)“A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. 13 Calling (BD)ten of his servants,[b] he gave them ten minas,[c] and said to them, ‘Engage in business (BE)until I come.’ 14 But (BF)his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. 16 The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant![d] Because you have been (BG)faithful in a very little, (BH)you shall have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in (BI)a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are (BJ)a severe man. You take (BK)what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He said to him, (BL)‘I will condemn you with your own words, (BM)you wicked servant! You knew that I was (BN)a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ 24 And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ 26 ‘I tell you that (BO)to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But (BP)as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and (BQ)slaughter them before me.’”

The Triumphal Entry

28 And when he had said these things, (BR)he went on ahead, (BS)going up to Jerusalem. 29 (BT)When he drew near to Bethphage and (BU)Bethany, at (BV)the mount that is called Olivet, he sent (BW)two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, (BX)on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it (BY)just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they (BZ)spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—(CA)the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice (CB)for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, (CC)“Blessed is (CD)the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and (CE)glory in the highest!” 39 (CF)And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, (CG)the very stones would cry out.”

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

41 (CH)And when he drew near and saw the city, (CI)he wept over it, 42 saying, (CJ)“Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now (CK)they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For (CL)the days will come upon you, when your enemies (CM)will set up a barricade around you and (CN)surround you and hem you in on every side 44 (CO)and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And (CP)they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know (CQ)the time of your (CR)visitation.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

45 (CS)And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46 saying to them, “It is written, (CT)‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but (CU)you have made it a den of robbers.”

47 (CV)And he was teaching daily in the temple. (CW)The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, 48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.

The Little Children and Jesus(A)

15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child(B) will never enter it.”

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(C)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(D)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[a](E)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor,(F) and you will have treasure in heaven.(G) Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!(H) 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”(I)

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”(J)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come(K) eternal life.”(L)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(M)

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem,(N) and everything that is written by the prophets(O) about the Son of Man(P) will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.(Q) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him(R) and kill him.(S) On the third day(T) he will rise again.”(U)

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.(V)

A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight(W)

35 As Jesus approached Jericho,(X) a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”(Y)

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David,(Z) have mercy(AA) on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”(AB)

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”(AC) 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.(AD)

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

19 Jesus entered Jericho(AE) and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(AF) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(AG)

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(AH)

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(AI) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(AJ) I will pay back four times the amount.”(AK)

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(AL) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(AM)

The Parable of the Ten Minas(AN)

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(AO) was going to appear at once.(AP) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(AQ) and gave them ten minas.[b] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(AR) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(AS)

18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’

19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’

20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’(AT)

22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,(AU) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?(AV) 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’

25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’

26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.(AW) 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(AX)(AY)

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(AZ) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(BA) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(BB) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”

32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(BC) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(BD) on the road.

37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(BE) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”[c](BF)

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”(BG)

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(BH)

40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”(BI)

41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it(BJ) 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.(BK) 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.(BL) They will not leave one stone on another,(BM) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming(BN) to you.”

Jesus at the Temple(BO)

45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’[d];(BP) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[e](BQ)

47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(BR) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(BS) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
