And many had gathered, so that there was no longer room, not even at the door, and he was speaking the word to them. And they came bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. And when[a] they were not able to bring him[b] to him because of the crowd, they removed the roof where he was. And after[c] digging through, they lowered the stretcher on which the paralytic was lying.

Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.
