3 But he told them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 How is it that he went into the house of God and ate the Bread of the Presence, which was not lawful for him and his companions to eat but was reserved[a] for the priests? 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that on every Sabbath[b] the priests in the Temple violate the Sabbath[c] and yet are innocent?[d]

3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(A) 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.(B) 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath(C) and yet are innocent?
