Jesus Calls the First Disciples

^18 (A)While walking by ^(B)the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. ¹⁹ And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you ^(C)fishers of men.”^{[a] 20} Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

^12 (A)Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, ^(B)what shall we do?” ¹³ And he said to them, ^(C)“Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” ¹⁴ Soldiers also asked him, “And we, ^(D)what shall we do?” And he said to them, ^(E)“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your ^(F)wages.”

Jesus and Zacchaeus

19 ^(A)He entered Jericho and was passing through. ² And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. ³ And ^(B)he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. ⁴ So he ran on ahead and climbed up into ^(C)a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. ⁵ And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for ^(D)I must stay at your house today.” ⁶ So he hurried and came down and ^(E)received him joyfully. ⁷ And when they saw it, they all ^(F)grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” ⁸ And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods ^(G)I give to the poor. And if I have ^(H)defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it ^(I)fourfold.” ⁹ And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since ^(J)he also is a son of Abraham.

¹⁹ (This he said to show ^(A)by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, ^(B)“Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

²⁰ Peter turned and saw ^(C)the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, ^(D)the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” ²¹ When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” ²² Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain ^(E)until ^(F)I come, what is that to you? ^(G)You follow me!”
