Numbers 20:14-21

Edom Denies Israel Passage

¹⁴Moses sent messengers from Kadesh^(A) to the king of Edom,^(B) saying:

“This is what your brother Israel says: You know^(C) about all the hardships^(D) that have come on us. ¹⁵Our ancestors went down into Egypt,^(E) and we lived there many years.^(F) The Egyptians mistreated^(G) us and our ancestors, ¹⁶but when we cried out to the Lord, he heard our cry^(H) and sent an angel^(I) and brought us out of Egypt.^(J)

“Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.^(K) ¹⁷Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.^(L)”

¹⁸But Edom^(M) answered:

“You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword.^(N)”

¹⁹The Israelites replied:

“We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock^(O) drink any of your water, we will pay for it.^(P) We only want to pass through on foot—nothing else.”

²⁰Again they answered:

“You may not pass through.^(Q)”

Then Edom^(R) came out against them with a large and powerful army. ²¹Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory,^(S) Israel turned away from them.^(T)

2 Chronicles 20:20-30

New International Version

²⁰Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith^(A) in the Lord your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.^(B)” ²¹After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his^[a] holiness^(C) as they went out at the head of the army, saying:

“Give thanks to the Lord,
for his love endures forever.”^(D)

²²As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes^(E) against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. ²³The Ammonites^(F) and Moabites rose up against the men from Mount Seir^(G) to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another.^(H)

²⁴When the men of Judah came to the place that overlooks the desert and looked toward the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped. ²⁵So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them a great amount of equipment and clothing^[b] and also articles of value—more than they could take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it. ²⁶On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berakah, where they praised the Lord. This is why it is called the Valley of Berakah^[c] to this day.

²⁷Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the Lord had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies. ²⁸They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the Lord with harps and lyres and trumpets.

²⁹The fear^(I) of God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the Lord had fought^(J) against the enemies of Israel. ³⁰And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest^(K) on every side.

A song. A psalm of Asaph.

¹O God, do not remain silent;^(A)
    do not turn a deaf ear,
    do not stand aloof, O God.
²See how your enemies growl,^(B)
    how your foes rear their heads.^(C)
³With cunning they conspire^(D) against your people;
    they plot against those you cherish.^(E)
⁴“Come,” they say, “let us destroy^(F) them as a nation,^(G)
    so that Israel’s name is remembered^(H) no more.”

⁵With one mind they plot together;^(I)
    they form an alliance against you—
⁶the tents of Edom^(J) and the Ishmaelites,
    of Moab^(K) and the Hagrites,^(L)
⁷Byblos,^(M) Ammon^(N) and Amalek,^(O)
    Philistia,^(P) with the people of Tyre.^(Q)
⁸Even Assyria^(R) has joined them
    to reinforce Lot’s descendants.^[b]^(S)

⁹Do to them as you did to Midian,^(T)
    as you did to Sisera^(U) and Jabin^(V) at the river Kishon,^(W)
¹⁰who perished at Endor^(X)
    and became like dung^(Y) on the ground.
¹¹Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,^(Z)
    all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,^(AA)
¹²who said, “Let us take possession^(AB)
    of the pasturelands of God.”

¹³Make them like tumbleweed, my God,
    like chaff^(AC) before the wind.
¹⁴As fire consumes the forest
    or a flame sets the mountains ablaze,^(AD)
¹⁵so pursue them with your tempest^(AE)
    and terrify them with your storm.^(AF)
¹⁶Cover their faces with shame,^(AG) Lord,
    so that they will seek your name.

¹⁷May they ever be ashamed and dismayed;^(AH)
may they perish in disgrace.^(AI)
¹⁸Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord^(AJ)—
that you alone are the Most High^(AK) over all the earth.^(AL)
