Psalm 38

Psalm 38[a]

A psalm of David. A petition.

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your wrath.(A)
Your arrows(B) have pierced me,
    and your hand has come down on me.
Because of your wrath there is no health(C) in my body;
    there is no soundness in my bones(D) because of my sin.
My guilt has overwhelmed(E) me
    like a burden too heavy to bear.(F)

My wounds(G) fester and are loathsome(H)
    because of my sinful folly.(I)
I am bowed down(J) and brought very low;
    all day long I go about mourning.(K)
My back is filled with searing pain;(L)
    there is no health(M) in my body.
I am feeble and utterly crushed;(N)
    I groan(O) in anguish of heart.(P)

All my longings(Q) lie open before you, Lord;
    my sighing(R) is not hidden from you.
10 My heart pounds,(S) my strength fails(T) me;
    even the light has gone from my eyes.(U)
11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;(V)
    my neighbors stay far away.
12 Those who want to kill me set their traps,(W)
    those who would harm me talk of my ruin;(X)
    all day long they scheme and lie.(Y)

13 I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,(Z)
    like the mute, who cannot speak;
14 I have become like one who does not hear,
    whose mouth can offer no reply.
15 Lord, I wait(AA) for you;
    you will answer,(AB) Lord my God.
16 For I said, “Do not let them gloat(AC)
    or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.”(AD)

17 For I am about to fall,(AE)
    and my pain(AF) is ever with me.
18 I confess my iniquity;(AG)
    I am troubled by my sin.
19 Many have become my enemies(AH) without cause[b];
    those who hate me(AI) without reason(AJ) are numerous.
20 Those who repay my good with evil(AK)
    lodge accusations(AL) against me,
    though I seek only to do what is good.

21 Lord, do not forsake me;(AM)
    do not be far(AN) from me, my God.
22 Come quickly(AO) to help me,(AP)
    my Lord and my Savior.(AQ)

Psalm 119:25-48

ד Daleth

25 I am laid low in the dust;(A)
    preserve my life(B) according to your word.(C)
26 I gave an account of my ways and you answered me;
    teach me your decrees.(D)
27 Cause me to understand the way of your precepts,
    that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds.(E)
28 My soul is weary with sorrow;(F)
    strengthen me(G) according to your word.(H)
29 Keep me from deceitful ways;(I)
    be gracious to me(J) and teach me your law.
30 I have chosen(K) the way of faithfulness;(L)
    I have set my heart(M) on your laws.
31 I hold fast(N) to your statutes, Lord;
    do not let me be put to shame.
32 I run in the path of your commands,
    for you have broadened my understanding.

ה He

33 Teach me,(O) Lord, the way of your decrees,

34 Give me understanding,(P) so that I may keep your law(Q)
    and obey it with all my heart.(R)
35 Direct me(S) in the path of your commands,(T)
    for there I find delight.(U)
36 Turn my heart(V) toward your statutes
    and not toward selfish gain.(W)
37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
    preserve my life(X) according to your word.[b](Y)
38 Fulfill your promise(Z) to your servant,
    so that you may be feared.
39 Take away the disgrace(AA) I dread,
    for your laws are good.
40 How I long(AB) for your precepts!
    In your righteousness preserve my life.(AC)

ו Waw

41 May your unfailing love(AD) come to me, Lord,
    your salvation, according to your promise;(AE)
42 then I can answer(AF) anyone who taunts me,(AG)
    for I trust in your word.
43 Never take your word of truth from my mouth,(AH)
    for I have put my hope(AI) in your laws.
44 I will always obey your law,(AJ)
    for ever and ever.
45 I will walk about in freedom,
    for I have sought out your precepts.(AK)
46 I will speak of your statutes before kings(AL)
    and will not be put to shame,(AM)
47 for I delight(AN) in your commands
    because I love them.(AO)
48 I reach out for your commands, which I love,
    that I may meditate(AP) on your decrees.

1 Kings 9:24-10:13

24 After Pharaoh’s daughter(A) had come up from the City of David to the palace Solomon had built for her, he constructed the terraces.(B)

25 Three(C) times a year Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the Lord, burning incense before the Lord along with them, and so fulfilled the temple obligations.

26 King Solomon also built ships(D) at Ezion Geber,(E) which is near Elath(F) in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea.[a] 27 And Hiram sent his men—sailors(G) who knew the sea—to serve in the fleet with Solomon’s men. 28 They sailed to Ophir(H) and brought back 420 talents[b] of gold,(I) which they delivered to King Solomon.

The Queen of Sheba Visits Solomon(J)

10 When the queen of Sheba(K) heard about the fame(L) of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions.(M) Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan(N)—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her. When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built, the food on his table,(O) the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at[c] the temple of the Lord, she was overwhelmed.

She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. But I did not believe(P) these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth(Q) you have far exceeded the report I heard. How happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear(R) your wisdom! Praise(S) be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love(T) for Israel, he has made you king to maintain justice(U) and righteousness.”

10 And she gave the king 120 talents[d] of gold,(V) large quantities of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

11 (Hiram’s ships brought gold from Ophir;(W) and from there they brought great cargoes of almugwood[e] and precious stones. 12 The king used the almugwood to make supports[f] for the temple of the Lord and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. So much almugwood has never been imported or seen since that day.)

13 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country.

James 3:1-12

Taming the Tongue

Not many of you should become teachers,(A) my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged(B) more strictly.(C) We all stumble(D) in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say(E) is perfect,(F) able to keep their whole body in check.(G)

When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.(H) Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.(I) Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire,(J) a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body,(K) sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.(L)

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.(M)

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.(N) 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?(O) Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Mark 15:1-11

Jesus Before Pilate(A)

15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(B) and the whole Sanhedrin,(C) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(D)

“Are you the king of the Jews?”(E) asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”

But Jesus still made no reply,(F) and Pilate was amazed.

Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(G) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(H) instead.
