Psalm 70-71

Psalm 70[a](A)

For the director of music. Of David. A petition.

Hasten, O God, to save me;
    come quickly, Lord, to help me.(B)

May those who want to take my life(C)
    be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
    be turned back in disgrace.(D)
May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”(E)
    turn back because of their shame.
But may all who seek you(F)
    rejoice and be glad(G) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”(H)

But as for me, I am poor and needy;(I)
    come quickly to me,(J) O God.
You are my help(K) and my deliverer;(L)
    Lord, do not delay.(M)

Psalm 71(N)

In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;(O)
    let me never be put to shame.(P)
In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me;
    turn your ear(Q) to me and save me.
Be my rock of refuge,
    to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
    for you are my rock and my fortress.(R)
Deliver(S) me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,(T)
    from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel.(U)

For you have been my hope,(V) Sovereign Lord,
    my confidence(W) since my youth.
From birth(X) I have relied on you;
    you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.(Y)
    I will ever praise(Z) you.
I have become a sign(AA) to many;
    you are my strong refuge.(AB)
My mouth(AC) is filled with your praise,
    declaring your splendor(AD) all day long.

Do not cast(AE) me away when I am old;(AF)
    do not forsake(AG) me when my strength is gone.
10 For my enemies(AH) speak against me;
    those who wait to kill(AI) me conspire(AJ) together.
11 They say, “God has forsaken(AK) him;
    pursue him and seize him,
    for no one will rescue(AL) him.”
12 Do not be far(AM) from me, my God;
    come quickly, God, to help(AN) me.
13 May my accusers(AO) perish in shame;(AP)
    may those who want to harm me
    be covered with scorn and disgrace.(AQ)

14 As for me, I will always have hope;(AR)
    I will praise you more and more.

15 My mouth will tell(AS) of your righteous deeds,(AT)
    of your saving acts all day long—
    though I know not how to relate them all.
16 I will come and proclaim your mighty acts,(AU) Sovereign Lord;
    I will proclaim your righteous deeds, yours alone.
17 Since my youth, God, you have taught(AV) me,
    and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.(AW)
18 Even when I am old and gray,(AX)
    do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power(AY) to the next generation,
    your mighty acts to all who are to come.(AZ)

19 Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens,(BA)
    you who have done great things.(BB)
    Who is like you, God?(BC)
20 Though you have made me see troubles,(BD)
    many and bitter,
    you will restore(BE) my life again;
from the depths of the earth(BF)
    you will again bring me up.
21 You will increase my honor(BG)
    and comfort(BH) me once more.

22 I will praise you with the harp(BI)
    for your faithfulness, my God;
I will sing praise to you with the lyre,(BJ)
    Holy One of Israel.(BK)
23 My lips will shout for joy(BL)
    when I sing praise to you—
    I whom you have delivered.(BM)
24 My tongue will tell of your righteous acts
    all day long,(BN)
for those who wanted to harm me(BO)
    have been put to shame and confusion.(BP)

Psalm 74

Psalm 74

A maskil[a] of Asaph.

O God, why have you rejected(A) us forever?(B)
    Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?(C)
Remember the nation you purchased(D) long ago,(E)
    the people of your inheritance,(F) whom you redeemed(G)
    Mount Zion,(H) where you dwelt.(I)
Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,(J)
    all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

Your foes roared(K) in the place where you met with us;
    they set up their standards(L) as signs.
They behaved like men wielding axes
    to cut through a thicket of trees.(M)
They smashed all the carved(N) paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled(O) the dwelling place(P) of your Name.(Q)
They said in their hearts, “We will crush(R) them completely!”
    They burned(S) every place where God was worshiped in the land.

We are given no signs from God;(T)
    no prophets(U) are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long(V) will the enemy mock(W) you, God?
    Will the foe revile(X) your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?(Y)
    Take it from the folds of your garment(Z) and destroy them!

12 But God is my King(AA) from long ago;
    he brings salvation(AB) on the earth.

13 It was you who split open the sea(AC) by your power;
    you broke the heads of the monster(AD) in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan(AE)
    and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.(AF)
15 It was you who opened up springs(AG) and streams;
    you dried up(AH) the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
    you established the sun and moon.(AI)
17 It was you who set all the boundaries(AJ) of the earth;
    you made both summer and winter.(AK)

18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
    how foolish people(AL) have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove(AM) to wild beasts;
    do not forget the lives of your afflicted(AN) people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,(AO)
    because haunts of violence fill the dark places(AP) of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed(AQ) retreat in disgrace;
    may the poor and needy(AR) praise your name.
22 Rise up,(AS) O God, and defend your cause;
    remember how fools(AT) mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor(AU) of your adversaries,(AV)
    the uproar(AW) of your enemies,(AX) which rises continually.

1 Kings 22:29-45

Ahab Killed at Ramoth Gilead(A)

29 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. 30 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will enter the battle in disguise,(B) but you wear your royal robes.” So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.

31 Now the king of Aram(C) had ordered his thirty-two chariot commanders, “Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king(D) of Israel.” 32 When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, “Surely this is the king of Israel.” So they turned to attack him, but when Jehoshaphat cried out, 33 the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel and stopped pursuing him.

34 But someone drew his bow(E) at random and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armor. The king told his chariot driver, “Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I’ve been wounded.” 35 All day long the battle raged, and the king was propped up in his chariot facing the Arameans. The blood from his wound ran onto the floor of the chariot, and that evening he died. 36 As the sun was setting, a cry spread through the army: “Every man to his town. Every man to his land!”(F)

37 So the king died and was brought to Samaria, and they buried him there. 38 They washed the chariot at a pool in Samaria (where the prostitutes bathed),[a] and the dogs(G) licked up his blood, as the word of the Lord had declared.

39 As for the other events of Ahab’s reign, including all he did, the palace he built and adorned with ivory,(H) and the cities he fortified, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 40 Ahab rested with his ancestors. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.

Jehoshaphat King of Judah(I)

41 Jehoshaphat son of Asa became king of Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel. 42 Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi. 43 In everything he followed the ways of his father Asa(J) and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. The high places,(K) however, were not removed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.[b] 44 Jehoshaphat was also at peace with the king of Israel.

45 As for the other events of Jehoshaphat’s reign, the things he achieved and his military exploits, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?

1 Corinthians 2:14-3:15

14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(A) but considers them foolishness,(B) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit(C) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”[a](D)

But we have the mind of Christ.(E)

The Church and Its Leaders

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit(F) but as people who are still worldly(G)—mere infants(H) in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food,(I) for you were not yet ready for it.(J) Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling(K) among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,”(L) are you not mere human beings?

What, after all, is Apollos?(M) And what is Paul? Only servants,(N) through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed,(O) Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.(P) For we are co-workers in God’s service;(Q) you are God’s field,(R) God’s building.(S)

10 By the grace God has given me,(T) I laid a foundation(U) as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.(V) 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is,(W) because the Day(X) will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.(Y) 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.(Z) 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.(AA)

Matthew 5:1-10

Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes(A)

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(B)
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.(C)
Blessed are the meek,
    for they will inherit the earth.(D)
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.(E)
Blessed are the merciful,
    for they will be shown mercy.(F)
Blessed are the pure in heart,(G)
    for they will see God.(H)
Blessed are the peacemakers,(I)
    for they will be called children of God.(J)
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,(K)
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(L)
