1. The Sabbath (23:1-3)

The term “sabbath of rest” comes from the word shāb̠at̠, which means “to rest, to cease” (cf. Ge 2:2-3 and Ex 20:8-11 for background on the divine institution of the Sabbath). Here Sabbath observance is to include a sacred assembly. Since it would have been impossible for all of the Israelites to attend a weekly gathering at the temple, this assembly must refer to a community gathering. The Christian Sabbath assembly was transferred to Sunday during the first century, most likely because that was the day Christ rose (cf. 1Co 16:2).
