1. The summons to discipleship (1:16-20)

Jesus initiates his public ministry by calling disciples, demonstrating that to repent and believe entails nothing less than following him. This story’s simplicity underscores the immediacy of the response of these four men and illustrates how following Jesus entails a reorientation of life. Here they leave their source of livelihood and the family business, with its tradition and security, then enter a new community in which they will be involved in, and not simply observe, Jesus' mission.
