An integral relationship exists between love and holiness. Holiness transforms self-centered tendencies in human love into dynamic caring for the well-being of others. Israelites are commanded to love their neighbors as themselves (v.18). They are not to oppress one another; the rich are to have compassion for their employees (v.13). Handicapped persons are to be treated with respect (v.14). Special provisions are to be extended to the poor. Farmers are to leave the corners of their fields and the gleaning from the harvest for the poor to gather (vv.9-10). God’s people must respect the elderly (v.32). Aliens living among the Israelites are to be treated the same as native-born persons. Indeed, God commands that the alien be loved as oneself (v.34).
