2. Regulations concerning mildew (13:47-59)

This regulation presents directions for handling mold, mildew, and other fungi in wool, linen, or leather garments. Such growths develop in clothing that has not been recently washed and has been stored in a warm, damp place. The regulation is similar to that for handling a person inflected with skin disease. The infected garment is shown to the priest, who examines and isolates the material for seven days. If the priest determines, on reexamination after seven days, that the growth has spread, he identifies it as mildew and burns the garment. But if the growth has not changed, the material is washed and isolated for seven more days. If on the second examination the growth has not faded, the garment is declared unclean and burned. But if the growth has faded, it is cut out of the garment. Should the mildew return at a later time, the material must be burned. A garment that appears to be without mildew after the first washing must be rewashed. If it appears normal, it is pronounced clean.
