Because Paul fears that they might succumb to temptation, he sends Timothy from Athens to strengthen them. Perhaps persecution was threatening anew. Certainly distorted views about the Parousia and the Christian life were causing doubts. If they yielded to temptation, all Paul’s efforts would have proved useless.
