2. Truth Versus Deception (4:1-5)

Contrary to the truths of the faith presented in 3:14-16 are the lies encountered in 4:1-3. We are not surprised because we are forewarned by the Spirit (v.1). These false teachers' consciences have been branded (niv seared as with a hot iron). Either their consciences are burnt with evil or they bear the Devil’s own brand. In either case, they lack the good conscience commended in 1:5 for the believer.

1Ti 4:3 refers to two specific false teachings of which abstinence from certain foods receives the major focus. Drawing on Ge 1:29-31, and possibly Ac 10:15, Paul offers an apologetic for the goodness of creation. The twicementioned thanksgiving emphasizes its importance for our attitude and action. Consecrated (Gk., “sanctified”) demonstrates that the food may be set apart/made holy. The sanctifying agents are (1) the word of God, referring to either God’s pronouncement at creation that all was very good (Ge 1:31) or the blessing by the believer or both, and (2) prayer, which would include thanksgiving.
