3. Jesus' mockery (15:16-20a)

Already in vv.2, 9, and 12, Jesus is referred to as the King of the Jews (see Matera), and this acclamation comes to a head as the soldiers dress him up as a king and exclaim, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Unwittingly, they address him correctly, but the authority Jesus exercises is not the sort one might expect (see 10:44-45).
