4. A disciple’s responsibility (9:42-50)

These seemingly unrelated sayings are held together by catchwords: first, causes . . . to sin (vv.42-48), then fire (vv.48-50). Together they communicate that entering the kingdom is worth any cost and that it is crucial to avoid behavior that would drive away “these little ones who believe in me” (i.e., Jesus' disciples; see on 9:36-37).
