4. Care of the Elders (5:17-20)

Now Paul turns his attention to ruling elders and their provisions and discipline. Honor is more than just a recognition of position; it also involves physical provision as illustrated by Paul’s supporting OT quotations. Both Scriptural illustrations are service-oriented. Using OT guidelines (Dt 17:6; 19:15 [Mt 18:16]), Paul counsels Timothy not to receive or even allow an accusation against an elder unless two witnesses support the charge (v.19). Leaders often hear accusations and must be careful not to give credence to unfounded attacks. On the other hand, if discipline is needed (v.20), it is to be done publicly as a corrective warning.
