4. Desertion by many disciples (6:60-71)

The reaction of many of Jesus' disciples to his teaching (v.60) prompted further explanation. It is not certain how 6:62 is to be interpreted, but 6:63, which sharply distinguishes flesh and spirit, gives the key to understanding the discourse on the bread of life: the words must be understood spiritually. The desertion of many of Jesus' disciples (vv.64-66) provoked Peter’s confession of belief (vv.67-68; cf. Mk 8:29 and its Synoptic parallels).
