4. Promise of preservation upon repentance (26:40-45)

In spite of such disobedience on the part of Israel and such severe punishment from God, forgiveness is promised if the Israelites repent. It is significant that God promises to remember his covenant, for it is through his covenant that God has demonstrated his everlasting faithfulness toward his people. By remembering, God is promising to preserve the identity of the remnant as Israel, his people, whether they live in a foreign land or in the Promised Land.
