4. Unbelief and belief (12:37-50)

On the whole, the Jews persisted in their unbelief in spite of the miracles Jesus had performed among them, as it had been prophesied that they would (vv.37-41; see Isa 53:1; 6:10). Although it is asserted that their lack of faith was because God had blinded their eyes, this is not simple determinism, since many did believe (vv.42-43). But their faith was clandestine and limited. Jesus' final public speech reiterates what he has already said about his link with the Father and the consequences of belief and unbelief (vv.44-50).
