4. Zion’s enemies will be destroyed (63:1-6)

Ch. 62 contained a promise that God would not allow Zion’s enemies to overwhelm her. Isa 63:1-6 portrays the fate of those enemies. The imagery of Yahweh marching in bloodstained garments and trampling “out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored” is somewhat disturbing. But in this original setting as well as in the nineteenth-century song, the imagery is intended more for effect than for an accurate depiction of reality.
