5. The teachers of the law challenged (12:35-44)

As a group, the teachers of the law not only marketed an inadequate view of the Christ but also maintained a false piety. Their showy religion won them public esteem and support from the poor but would lead them to judgment. By contrast, this poor, widowed woman, at the bottom rung of society’s ladder, whose commitment was complete, becomes an exemplar of discipleship.
