The chronicler completes his genealogical survey with the family of the first Israelite monarch, Saul. This is a more extensive list than 7:6-12. The variations in the lists may result from the chronicler depending upon sources from different times for each list. Vv.28-39, which parallel 9:34-44, show that the author was concerned with Saul’s family. The chronicler starts his discussion of the monarchy with a brief account of the tragic end of the first king’s reign.
