6. Zion, beloved by Yahweh (54:1-17)

The prophet returns to the idea of the barren woman who has more children than her house can possibly hold (cf. 49:21). There will be no more need to fear, for Yahweh who is her maker is also her husband. With language similar to that of Hosea, the prophet mentions Yahweh’s temporary fit of anger. But now it serves to highlight his enduring and eternal compassion.

The prophet draws a comparison with the days of Noah where chaos temporarily reigned (the exile was referred to as a time of chaos), only to be followed by an everlasting covenant.

Now, in direct address to Zion, Yahweh details his future plans for his beloved city. It is language that can be described only as eschatological, for it transcends the realm of historical reality. There will be no need of priests, for the Lord himself will teach Zion’s children. And the city will be safe from any and every oppressor.
