A. Greetings of Paul to Timothy (1:1-2)

Paul introduces himself as Christ’s apostle, which establishes his position and authority. Rather than saying “by the will of God,” which is his usual pattern, Paul states more strongly by the command [epitagē] of God. This introduces the command structure so important in the Pastoral Epistles. Paul’s description of God as our Savior draws from the OT witness to God’s saving acts. Christ Jesus, our hope, stresses the strength and courage available to the believer through Christ.

In 1:2 Paul describes Timothy as a true son (Gk., “child”) in the faith, placing importance on the quality and character of the relationship. He continues the relational concept by describing God as Father and Christ Jesus as Lord. The expansion of Paul’s normal greeting of grace and peace by interjecting mercy reflects the mercy Paul has received (cf. v.16).
