a. Jehoshaphat’s reign (17:1-19)

The Lord enables this king to strengthen his fortifications against Israel. In his early years, Jehoshaphat is righteous, his intentions are pure, and he removes items and places of false worship. Besides his building projects and personal piety, Jehoshaphat sends officials on missions to instruct the people in the Lord’s law. As in the case of holy war, but without conflict, the fear of the Lord falls on Judah’s neighbors. The Philistines, once powerful conquerors, bring tribute to Jehoshaphat. The king is powerful because of his obedience, and his future looks bright.
