A. Promised by God (1:1-2)

Paul introduces himself both as a servant and apostle. The term apostle (in keeping with 1Ti 1:1 and 2Ti 1:1) shows the authority that Paul has. By placing servant before apostle, Paul clearly demonstrates humility and obedience: he is a servant leader. The elect are chosen or called out ones, those who respond to God. It does not imply limited atonement, that only the chosen will be saved.

Paul sees his servant apostleship as promoting the faith of the elect and the full knowledge (epignōsis) of the truth. The definite article with truth identifies truth as a specific body of absolute teaching. This faith and knowledge of the truth leads to godliness and rests on the hope of eternal life, which is assured by God’s faithful nature and promise.
