A. Salutation (1:1-2)

This typical Pauline greeting follows a form common to the Greek world. Note the absence of reference to apostleship. Instead Paul and Timothy are identified as servants of Christ Jesus. “The saints” means the holy covenant people of God. The phrase “in Christ Jesus,” frequent in Paul’s writings, means the sphere of God’s saving activity. The terms grace and peace combine the typical Greek and Jewish greetings respectively.
