A. Thanksgiving (1:3-4)

The opening thanksgiving seems formal. Some suggest liturgical overtones (see Bruce, 143); others, a trace of coolness. Nonetheless, it is a genuine thanksgiving for their continuing growth in grace, evoked by further good news about their steadfastness.

Their circumstances have not improved, however. Nor have their problems been resolved. Pressure continues, both from within and without. So does growth in grace. Interestingly enough, Paul does not give thanks for their love and faith; it is their perseverance in the face of trials that brings thanksgiving.
