A. The Departure From Sinai (10:11-36)

Mountains are not for living on but for visiting. The old gospel song “I'm Living on a Mountain” is appealing but not biblical.

In this chapter we have geographical information (from the wilderness of Sinai to the wilderness of Paran, v.12) and data about the order of march (vv.14-28, picking up on ch. 2). We also read that Moses insisted that a relative of his by marriage, Hobab, accompany the march (vv.29-32).

But most important of all is the emphasis on the presence of God with his people, underscored by repeated references to the cloud (vv.11, 12, 34). In fact, this section is ringed by that theme. Thus 10:11-36 highlights the cloud of 9:15-23 rather than the trumpets of 10:1-10. That God is with his people led Moses to prayer and worship (vv.35, 36).
