B. Jesus' First Disciples (1:35-51)

John’s repeated reference to Jesus as the Lamb of God led two of his disciples to attach themselves to Jesus (vv.35-42). One of them was Andrew, the brother of Simon, whom Jesus renamed Cephas (Aramaic for rock). The other might have been John the son of Zebedee, but this cannot be proved. Two other disciples were added the next day (vv.43-51). When Jesus was ready to leave for Galilee, he called Philip of Bethsaida to follow him. Philip in turn informed Nathaniel of Jesus, naming him as the one foretold in the Law—that is, the Messiah. Nathaniel’s initial skepticism gave way to a confession of faith when he saw a display of Jesus' supernatural knowledge. This in turn led to a solemn assertion that Nathaniel would see even greater things than this, for Jesus is the Son of Man, the Mediator between heaven and earth.
