B. Jesus' Prediction of Betrayal (13:18-30)

Jesus was in control of his fate and even knew and predicted his betrayal by one close to him. Of several things of interest in this passage, we may notice these. (1) Jesus himself stressed the applicability of Ps 41:9 to the case of Judas (v.18; cf. 26-27). (2) Jesus' prophecy of treachery was to lead to belief just as his miracles had done (vv.19-20; cf. 2:11). (3) This is the first time the disciple whom Jesus loved is mentioned in those terms in John (v.23; cf. 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20), and he is characteristically connected with Peter (v.24). (4) When, moved by Satan, Judas went out from the presence of Jesus, he went symbolically from light into darkness, as 13:30 underscores with the words, And it was night.
