B. Joshua’s Farewell to the Leaders (23:1-16)

As Joshua’s death drew near, he called the leaders of Israel to him for final instruction and encouragement. First, he reminded them that God would continue to drive out the Canaanites who yet remained in the land. It was imperative that Israel not make any accommodation with them in the meantime lest they become a snare and lead Israel astray into the worship of other gods. Israel’s continued faithfulness in the land was essential to her continued dwelling in the land. These leaders of the people bore special responsibility for keeping Israel faithful.

Joshua’s farewell exhortation exhibits a solemn theme that is both hope and warning. God is holy; therefore, Joshua could speak with optimism and hope of God’s good words and of the good land into which God had brought them. God is holy; therefore, God cannot change his character even if his people change. If the people rebel against God, it will not damage God; but rebellion will destroy the rebellious.
