B. The Exigence of Integrity (5:12)

The new thought of 5:12 is heralded with the words “Above all” and leaves the reader to provide the connection with what precedes. Briefly, James takes up the necessity for integrity. The habit of affirming with an oath was deeply ingrained in Palestinian society. It served various purposes, one of which was the exhibition of piety. This became a subtle form of hypocrisy, trading with counterfeits. The words translated “be condemned” contain the notion of hypocrisy. The readers accordingly are warned about falling into hypocrisy. James summons them to integrity when he orders: “Do not swear.” Integrity is best served by simplicity and straightforward conversation.
