B. The First Divine Council Meeting (1:6-12)

The sovereignty of God is seen in this section as he presides over the angels (cf. Pss 82:1; 89:5). Satan is among these angels, as a regular or possibly as an intruder. He responds to God’s question about Job’s goodness with skepticism. He cannot deny Job’s goodness, but he insinuates that Job’s piety is part of a bargain. Job is righteous because it is to his advantage. Confident of the outcome, the Lord grants Satan permission to strike everything Job has.
