The covenant established, there follows a fuller description of what is involved in this special relationship that God has initiated. The covenant marks the birth of a salvation history that is symbolized both in the change of Abram’s name (hence a change in his status) and the visible sign of belonging to God (circumcision). The covenant is more than an agreement between two consenting parties; it becomes the very fiber of the community’s life. The life of faith must be marked by complete allegiance to the all-powerful God (v.1). Unfortunately, Abraham does not comprehend the full extent of newness inherent in the promise and scorns the idea of another heir apart from Ishmael (v.17). While Ishmael will be blessed (v.20), the promise must be extended through the child of God’s grace.
