Paul offers additional reasons why the Corinthians should give generously (cf. 8:1-9). He mentions only in passing the most obvious and direct result of the collection: supplying the needs of God’s people (9:12a), the poor in Jerusalem. Instead he stresses how Corinth’s generosity will benefit the Corinthians and God (vv.11b-14). Despite Paul’s mention of the self-serving benefits of generosity, he makes it clear that people are not to give in order to get, but because they have already received. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift (v.15).
