C. Prayer in Gethsemane (14:32-42)

Gethsemane marks the critical point in the Passion story, as Jesus recognizes the approach of the fateful hour and prays that he might be delivered from suffering and death. His prayer bespeaks his extraordinary intimacy with God (Abba) as well as his focus on following God’s will. In so doing, he shows his disciples how to stand in the time of testing—not by sleeping, but by submissive prayer.
