To prevent succession problems at his death, Rehoboam appoints Abijah as crown prince. To avoid palace intrigue, he disperses his sons into various districts of the kingdom and provides abundantly for their needs. The chronicler portrays Rehoboam, in the first part of his reign, as a faithful and capable ruler.
