C. The Postexilic Community (9:2-44)

The chronicler emphasizes that the clergy were among some Israelites who first resettled in Judah. These religious functionaries were necessary to organize the postexilic community.

This genealogy balances the introductory list of Adam to Israel. Ch. 1 provides the ancestry of the Israelite tribes, ch. 9 the progeny. Just as the persons of ch. 1 were linked to the tribes, the postexilic community stands in continuity with the tribes as well (Williamson, 87).

The author ends the lengthy genealogical section with a second listing of Saul’s family to introduce the story of the monarchy.
